Community Showcase - Rhaegys and the Eldfall Chronicles Build
Share
Here at Modi Boxi, we love seeing all of the amazing work that people put into the #showcase channel of our community Discord Server. I had a chance to catch up with Rhaegys who put together an amazing build for Eldfall Chronicles!
Trapper: It's great to meet the builder behind this one! Tell us all a little about yourself and how you got started with 3D printing.
Rhaegys: I'm your regular board game geek based in Barcelona, Spain. I am a collector of too many board games and pen/paper RPGs, at least too many for my poor house to hold them in! I'm also a cat-dad of a little tiger (a Maine coon).
I'm pretty new to 3D printing. I've had a CR6 SE for a few years, but I didn't really start using it until last year. Soon after, I upgraded to a K1C—I’m too impatient for a slow printer. The main reason I got into 3D printing was to create terrain for our roleplay sessions, and from there, I fell down the 3D printing rabbit hole. Right now, our game is on hiatus, so instead of printing terrain, I'm creating inserts and storage solutions for my board games, among other things.
Trapper: I can't say I know what a Maine Coon is, so I will need to google that! How did you first hear about Modi Boxi, and what made you jump into the community?
Rhaegys: I honestly don’t remember exactly, but I think it popped up in one of Kickstarter’s newsletters about new projects. I got Modi Boxi because I thought it was a cool system with a lot of potential uses—even though, at the time, I didn’t have a specific project in mind.
My first Boxi project was a storage solution for all the terrain I had printed. When I started printing Boxis, I joined the Discord server almost right away because I had questions, and the people there were incredibly helpful. Now, I try to answer other people’s questions if I can. I like helping others, and I also enjoy seeing what other people are making—it inspires me for my own projects.
Trapper: I can't tell you how helpful it is for people like you to help others that join our Discord looking for help on builds. As you know, it's a large system, so there are many things to think through before starting a project. Thank you for all your help!
As for this specific build of yours, what inspired it? What was your process to make it come to life? How long did it take?
Rhaegys: My build is for Eldfall Chronicles, a skirmish miniature game that comes with unassembled minis. Once you assemble everything, the original game boxes can’t hold them anymore, so I decided to use Modi Boxi. I love rail systems for storing minis.
The whole project took me between a week and a half to two weeks, including printing. I already had experience printing Boxi parts, but this was my first time using the rail system. I had to figure out how it worked, how many miniatures would fit, etc. I guessed that I needed a large Boxi—medium wouldn't be enough, and XL would probably be overkill.
The first thing I did was print a rail extension (Level 1) and holders of different sizes to figure out how to store the miniatures and how many Boxis I would need. This part probably took the most time. I decided that two Level 3 medium Boxis would be enough, with just a couple of minis needing a separate Boxi. But since I can't do math, it turned out that it was more than just a couple! Then I realized that if I magnetized them, I could place some metal stickers on the bottom of the Boxi holding the big minis and store the remaining minis in the empty spaces.
For the tokens, dice, and cards, I knew I could use small tray parts, so I checked out the available options until I found the perfect fit inside a Level 2 Boxi.
The final Boxi was a Level 1 for the cardboard terrain and rulebook (I almost had a heart attack when I realized the rulebook was 0.1mm bigger than the Boxi—but it fit in the end!). The last piece was the playmat sidecar for the terrain mat.
I also wanted the lid to have the game's name. I used the customized lid option, but that was not fun at all because I had to print the large parts vertically (my printer is only 220x220). And since they had holes, I had to print them with supports—so much wasted filament! But I love how it turned out. For colors, I tried to match the four factions in the game: white, dark red (red), purple, and teal (green).
Trapper: Well it turned out absolutely fantastic, and it's clear you gave a lot of thought to the exact Modi Boxi pieces that would work with this game. When we thought of Modi Boxi, this was one of the main ideas. So many games out there don't go back in the same box, or they are DIY game projects that don't have a box in the first place. The fact that Modi Boxi can fill that gap and you are showing exactly how to do that is amazing.
Are there other builds/projects you’re working on with Modi Boxi?
Rhaegys: My first Modi Boxi project was storage for my 3D-printed terrain: an XL composite Boxi consisting of one Level 5, one Level 3, and one Level 2. Instead of using a cage structure, I used staggered Boxis.
My next Modi Boxi project will probably be for my friend’s Blood Bowl team.
Trapper: As someone who has cranked out a number of high-quality builds now, what advice do you have for someone who is maybe just getting started with Modi Boxi? Any tips or tricks you've learned as you've finished a few projects?
Rhaegys: Join the Discord and ask for help! The creators are super helpful, but so is the rest of the community—there are lots of people willing to assist.
Also, take a look at the instructions to see everything Modi Boxi has to offer. It’ll give you ideas for what you can do. And don't be afraid to print some stuff for testing (especially the mini holders for the rail system).
Trapper: You mention the instructions. It is surprising to me how many people never look at those or don't know they exist. So many times, I point people to the instructions, and they are like, "This is what I was looking for!" So thank you for sending people to them!
Are there any other non-Modi Boxi projects you want people to know about?
Rhaegys: After searching for a good paint station to print, I couldn’t find anything I liked that would also fit within my printer’s size limitations. So, I’m designing my own solution!
My plan is to make it as modular as possible, and if I’m happy enough with the final result, I might share it in some way (hopefully, I can earn a few extra bucks from it!).
Trapper: Well that sounds excellent. Please don't hesitate to promote that in the Discord and let us know when you ship it! Thanks for being a part of the community, and congrats on an amazing build!
