Using Modi Case for Gaslands

Using Modi Case for Gaslands

What is Gaslands?

If you are not familiar with the tabletop game GASLANDS, it's a car driving and battle game where you race Hot Wheels cars (that you can paint/mod up with weapons and armor) around a defined course on a table, trying to be the first one to cross the finish line. It's a great way to spend an evening with friends, living out your Mad Max fantasies! (WITNESS).

When Jeff and I were prototyping Modi Case before our announcement, I planned to use Gaslands as a test case for the type of build I might do with this evolved system. I had a previous Modi Boxi build that worked great. It was a single large Boxi with some DIY trays and a book carrier on the bottom. I brought it back and forth to my friends' house many times, and it did the job well enough!

Modi Case Gaslands

For the Modi Case version, I wanted something with trays for all the dice, all the pieces, the movement templates, the book, and any papers. After a couple of days of printing, we arrived at this!

Modi Case isn't as efficient in terms of design size and space use. The shelving takes up quite a bit more space to store the same number of items, but it all comes together into a nicely organized set of trays. I did use some DIY shelves to handle some of the terrain and more bulky game objects.

One of the largest movement templates does not fit in any of the trays, so it is lying in the book holder. When you pull everything out for the game, it looks like this:

Build List

Here is what the project file looks like in the slicer:

The build list includes two medium Modi Cases, a Level 03 (shelf side) and a Level 02 (book side), and all the trays and components to get it together.

Summary

I’m excited to have completed a Gaslands build for Modi Case, taking what used to be a more utilitarian Boxi carrier and evolving it into something much more purpose-built for how the game plays. Instead of digging through a single container, everything now lives in organized shelving with dedicated trays for dice, templates, and parts that can go straight from the case to the table. It may take up a bit more space, but the payoff is a cleaner setup, faster play, and a system that feels designed specifically for running a great Gaslands night.
