Modi Boxi Design Change FAQ
We want to share an important update regarding Modi Boxi’s design and recent changes we've made to keep our system running strong. Please read below for complete details.
What happened?
Modi Boxi was made aware of U.S. Patent No. 12,157,606 around the time it was issued in December 2024.
We retained the services of two different law firms to assist us regarding this patent and Modi Boxi.
Our current design does not infringe on any valid claim of that patent. However, to avoid any confusion, we decided to tweak the design of Modi Boxi.
How is Modi Boxi tweaking the design?
There will be two Boxi styles from now on:
- Symmetrical - We’ve removed the middle holes on two of the sides of the Boxi
- Asymmetrical - We’ve removed a middle hole only on one side.
This causes Modi Boxi to give up a few features, but this change does not materially compromise the overall breadth of the system.
What action do I need to take?
Follow these two steps:
- Go to MMF or your ModiBoxi.com download link and download version 14 of the Modi Boxi files. These changes are for all Boxis in the Core pack and the XL pack.
- That’s it! Start using those new Boxi files. You can keep designing, printing, and building Boxis to store and transport your gear!
Are you admitting there was an issue with the previous design?
No, we are voluntarily making adjustments to avoid unnecessary legal disputes.
Does this affect my ability to sell the product?
No. If you are a reseller, we have consulted our lawyers and are confident that this design tweak is even further away from infringing any valid claim of that patent.
Will this affect product availability or future updates?
No, we are making necessary adjustments to maintain business continuity without interruptions.
Can I still sell Boxi’s with all the holes if I've already printed them?
You should not continue to sell Boxi’s with all the holes. For your commercial license, please only use and sell version 14 Boxis.
Will this impact my business financially?
No, the workaround ensures continued sales with minimal disruption and should allow our resellers to continue designing and distributing various types of designs for their customers.
What should I do if I receive any legal communication about this?
Forward any communication to legal@modiboxi.com, and our legal team will handle it. We request that you do not engage in discussions directly with anyone posing as a representative of any other company.
